This work is the result of a seminar on painting on wood conducted by Mondino in Austria, near Lake Constance. During his first trip to the zone the artist was struck by the wooden shingles of the facades of the houses, weathered to a silvery color that made them seem like gigantic fish to his “myopic eyes.” During the Nazi period the boats on this lake that touches on Germany, Switzerland and Austria were used for the escape of victims of political persecution, so Mondino chose them as the surface for his painting project. He had two old boats, full of history and memories, transported to a hilltop; after having cleaned them and covered them with shingles, he had the students paint them with the colors of the contrade of the Palio di Siena. For the artist, the Palio holds the same mystery as an Arabian market, made of incomprehensible signs and riddles. Just as the Corrida, another passion of his, is a dramatic celebration of passion, full of poetry, which reminds him of painting.
