Aldo Mondino exhibited at the 1976 Venice International Art Biennale, translating the structure of Arnold Schönberg’s twelve-tone music into a visual, serial score on canvas, thus marking his return to painting.

Aldo Mondino exhibited at the Venice International Art Biennale in the summer of 1976, taking part in the 37th edition, emblematically titled “Environment, Participation, Cultural Structures”. Invited to take part in an exhibition strongly focused on the analysis of space and conceptual engagement, the Turin-based artist presented a cultured and rigorous body of work that marked his temporary departure from the disruptive object-based installations of previous years to reclaim the practice of painting.
In a climate of profound theoretical reflection, influenced by his recent move to Paris, Mondino responded to the Venetian context with a sophisticated homage to the great culture of the historical avant-garde. The core of his work revolves around a philological parallel between the pictorial surface and Arnold Schönberg’s twelve-tone music, visually translating the Austrian composer’s compositional structure through a system of juxtapositions and serial repetitions of the mark. The canvas is thus transformed into a visual score, where geometric rigour and conceptual complexity are filtered through his unfailing intellectual irony.
