‘Festa araba’ by Aldo Mondino (1935–2005) and ‘Il grande sacrificio’ by Lorenzo Puglisi (1971) are the two monumental works that form the centrepiece of the spectacular exhibition entitled ‘Aldo Mondino – Lorenzo Puglisi. La Resistenza’, on display from 3 to 16 February 2025 in the Sala Berti of the Istituto Storico Parri in Bologna (Via Sant’Isaia, 20) to mark the 80th Anniversary of Liberation (1945). The exhibition, curated by Barbara Vincenzi, is organised by the Aldo Mondino Archive in Milan and the Santo Ficara Gallery in Florence, in collaboration with the Parri Institute and under the patronage of the Municipality of Bologna, the Legislative Assembly of the Emilia-Romagna Region and the Metropolitan City of Bologna. It takes place as part of ART CITY Bologna 2025, during Arte Fiera. An exhibition centred on the power of freedom and personal conviction. A grand tribute, in both scale and intent, to the Italian Resistance that brought the Second World War to a close by liberating our country from Nazi-Fascist occupation. A visual and tactile symbol of the possibility of treading difficult paths that honour the principles held by the artists and men Mondino and Puglisi. Two oversized paintings, each over six metres in length, whose power and significance match that of the historic anniversary marking the birth of the Italian Republic, thanks to the symbolism embodied in the two works. In these two works, in fact, lies the human and mystical essence of a Resistance understood as a tribute to the extreme sacrifice made by young men and women to guarantee the rule of law and the civil liberties we enjoy today—and which we all too often take for granted—but which also represent the Resistance of the oppressed against the oppressor in every war and in every age, the Resistance of the different against the establishment, and that of the artist against a world that no longer seeks the toil of painting and the isolation that, when it comes to radical painting, inevitably follows.
The opening will take place on Monday 3 February 2025 (6.30 pm) in the presence of Antonio Mondino of the Aldo Mondino Archive and Lorenzo Puglisi, within the 17th-century frescoed setting of the Sala Berti at the Institute named after Ferruccio Parri and dedicated to the Actionist-Resistance movement. In this historical and values-based context, it will therefore be possible to admire, in dialogue with one another, two works—among the greatest ever created by the two Piedmontese artists—as a symbol of the ever-living memory of a Resistance understood as a struggle to defend and maintain consistency with one’s natural, moral, civil and political values, the pillars of our republican history. The exhibition will also be open to the public on the night of 8 February during the ART CITY Bologna White Night.
The press preview will take place on Saturday 1 February 2025 at 12.30 pm at the Istituto Storico Parri (Bologna - Via Sant’Isaia, 20). Speakers will include the director of the Istituto Storico Parri Bologna Metropolitana, Agnese Portincasa; Antonio Mondino; Lorenzo Puglisi; the director of MAMbo – the Museum of Modern Art of Bologna, part of the Bologna Civic Museums Department, Lorenzo Balbi; the exhibition curator, Barbara Vincenzi; and the critic and art history
