MONDINO A COLORI. La pittura dagli esordi al linoleum
La Spezia – From 30 March to 22 September 2019, the CAMeC Centre for Modern and Contemporary Art presents “Mondino in Colour. Painting from the early days to linoleum”, a retrospective tracing the entire pictorial output of Aldo Mondino.
Promoted by the Municipality of La Spezia and produced by CAMeC – Centre for Modern and Contemporary Art, based on a curatorial project by the Aldo Mondino Archive, the exhibition will open on Friday 29 March at 6.00 pm.
The exhibition is intended as an ideal counterpoint to the exhibition “Aldo Mondino scultore” (Pietrasanta, 2010), exploring – in the very city that hosted Il Premio del Golfo, one of the most important painting prizes of the 20th century – this medium, so to speak, ‘natural’ and characteristic of La Spezia.
On display are some forty works on canvas, paper and linoleum created between 1961 and 2000, all drawn from the Aldo Mondino Archive and a select group of lenders. From his early paintings, through the “Quadri a quadretti” and the faux engravings, we arrive at the linoleum works, which brought the artist popularity even among the general public. The emergence of this medium in the 1980s stemmed from a veritable obsession with the world of graphic art, linked to the concept of colour and the pictorial mark. Linoleum, a material of great importance in engraving techniques, was used as a support for several famous series of paintings such as the “Dervishes” or the “Jews”. In addition to the play on words inherent in the very etymology of the term ‘linoleum’ (linseed oil / oil on linen), Mondino was also fascinated by the wide variety of colours and textures found in such a simple, industrial material – just as he was by Eraclit, the ‘poor’ wood of shipyards, on which he painted his equally famous ‘Tappeti’.
