Galleria Rossi & Rossi is launching its partnership with Giovanni Martino to exhibit works by European artists in Asia with an event dedicated to Aldo Mondino. Mondino’s work, centred on painting but also inclined to explore sculpture and performance, has developed through the appropriation of stylistic and formal qualities from both the historical avant-garde movements (Surrealism and Dadaism) and the art of his own time.
The exhibition at the Rossi & Rossi Gallery explores Mondino’s quest to reinvent painting in times of political and social transformation, with a particular focus on portraits and figurative painting on linoleum. Mondino’s travels shaped his ability to place human relationships at the heart of his discovery of the other and gave rise to an anarchic and paradoxical practice, guided by a sense of cultural and creative nomadism.
The works on display at the Gallery include “Granada” (1996), from the series of paintings dedicated to the great sultans of the Ottoman Empire; “Gnawa” (1997), from the group of works on the eponymous African dancers; and “Chukri” (1996), one of numerous portraits paying homage to other artists and prominent figures.
