Aldo Mondino’s works return to Turin, taking centre stage from 6 November to 11 January in a major exhibition project organised by the ‘curator-non-curator’ Maurizio Cattelan as part of One Torino, for Artissima 2014
For the 2014 edition, the Artissima contemporary art fair is reinventing itself through the ONE TORINO exhibition which, now in its second year, reinvents itself by presenting a single, brand-new project, staged in the evocative setting of Palazzo Cavour and entrusted to the curator-non-curator, retired artist and curious mind who knows how to discover and help others discover, Maurizio Cattelan, supported by Myriam Ben Salah, curator of special projects at the Palais de Tokyo, and Marta Papini, independent curator.
SHIT AND DIE is the provocative title of the exhibition, borrowed from Bruce Nauman’s 1984 work “One Hundred Live and Die”: brief neon slogans summarise the essential elements shared by living beings across space and time, suggesting a vision of the human condition in general. Namely, the body, work and vices.
The exhibition takes the city of Turin as its main source of inspiration and is organised into a route divided into sections, each of which takes as its starting point a place, an impression encountered in the city’s museums, or a specific object “borrowed” from the city’s and region’s less conventional collections. “We will bring together unsettling memories of Turin and bizarre ghosts of Palazzo Cavour in the most subjective, obsessive, irrational and non-exhaustive way possible”: various stories, objects and works of art merge into a coherent narrative that becomes a tale.
The objects and works on display bring Turin’s history to light, highlighting its fetishes and secrets, and interact with contemporary artworks by some 50 artists, ranging from emerging talents to established names on the international art scene.
Among them, Aldo Mondino (through the Archive) participates in the project with his passion for the East, exemplified by the ‘Carpets’ in Heraclitus, and with his taste for wordplay, represented through the reconstruction of the ‘Torre di Torrone’ (Private collection, Cuneo).
