Il gioco è fatto

Eighty days of programming, over a hundred events and more than eight hundred artists from five continents. These are the figures for the 2006 edition of the Ravello Festival, which will take place from 30 June to 17 September.
The theme of this edition is ‘Play’, a sort of Wagnerian leitmotif that will run through the packed programme of artistic performances.
It is indeed in Wagner, moreover, that the festival—founded in 1953 and completely restructured since 2003 (when it came under the management of the Ravello Foundation, promoted by the Campania Region – Department of Tourism, the Province of Salerno, the Municipality of Ravello, and the Monte dei Paschi di Siena Foundation)—finds its artistic inspiration.
Today, the Ravello Festival takes place in the settings that have made this town on the Amalfi Coast so famous: Villa Rufolo first and foremost, but also Villa Cimbrone, the squares, the churches and the gardens.
For eighty days, music, dance, cinema, exhibitions, conferences and meetings will accompany the public on a fascinating journey guided by Play.
The 107 events that make up the Ravello Festival 2006 are divided into eight sections, each dedicated to a great artist who stayed in Ravello and drew inspiration from it.

The sections are:

- Symphony section, dedicated to Richard Wagner, from 30 June to 11 August, under the artistic direction of Lorenzo Ferrero;
- Trends section, dedicated to David Herbert Lawrence, 6, 21 and 22 July, under the artistic direction of Alessio Vlad;
- Chamber Music Section, dedicated to Edvard Grieg, from 1 to 17 September, under the artistic direction of Stefano Valanzuolo, in collaboration with the Accademia Musicale Chigiana in Siena;
- Musical Walks Section, dedicated to Edward Morgan Forster, from 2 July to 30 August, under the artistic direction of Stefano Valanzuolo;
- Cinemusic section, dedicated toGreta Garbo, from 30 July to 9 August, under the artistic direction of Lina Wertmüller and Remigio Truocchio;
- Visual arts section, dedicated to Maurits Cornelis Escher, from 30 June to 17 September, under the artistic direction of Achille Bonito Oliva;
- Education Section, dedicated to André Gide, from 30 June to 1 September, withFrancesco Durante as scientific director of the public talks and S3.Studium as scientific director of the seminars and conferences;
- Special Events Section, dedicated to Giovanni Boccaccio, with a series of events spread throughout the Festival; coordinated by Elio Macinante.
An intensive search has been undertaken for unique and evocative events for this 2006 edition. We would like to highlight, for example, the exhibition Il Gioco è fatto, curated by Achille Bonito Oliva, on display at the wonderful Villa Rufolo for the entire duration of the Festival (30 June–17 September), featuring works by Marcel Duchamp, Piero Manzoni, Alighiero Boetti, Aldo Mondino, Luigi Ontani and Narcisa Monni. Collaborative works, such as those by Enzo Cucchi and his students, videos and films including Entracte, Parade (1974) by René Clair, A Soft-Self Portrait (1971) by Orson Welles and Salvador Dalí.
Of particular note is the appearance, on 6 July, of the renowned choreographer Roland Petit, who will reinterpret the show “Le jeu de l’amour et du hasard” in a completely new form.
On 15 July, the traditional Wagner concert will take place, celebrating the German composer’s famous visit to Ravello.
In August, on the night of San Lorenzo, the evocative Dawn Concert will return, featuring works by Mozart, Schubert, Rossini, Britten and Kodály. The sunrise will be accompanied, as always, by the notes of Edvard Grieg’s “Morning”.

An important chamber music weekend takes place on 1, 2 and 3 September, featuring cellist Giovanni Sollima, clarinettist Antony Pay, the Prometeo Quartet and students from the Chigiana’s advanced courses. On 5 August, the Lifetime Achievement Award will be presented to the musician and former Oscar winner (for “Il postino”), Luis Bacalov, who will perform in the dual role of conductor and pianist alongside the Mozart Sinfonietta.
On 3 August, the Ravello Festival welcomes Italian-American writer Robert Viscusi, with a unique poetic-musical performance entitled “Orazione sulla recentissima scomparsa di Cristoforo Colombo” (Ode on the very recent passing of Christopher Columbus).
On 10 August, meanwhile, the much-anticipated meeting with Edoardo Sanguineti.
On 13 July, the action moves to Scala, not far from Ravello, to the Basilica of Sant’Eustachio, where the play “The Templars: Final Act” will be staged, starring Paolo Graziosi and directed by Consuelo Barilari.
